You may have seen or heard something in the news recently about a scam called check “washing.” This is when thieves steal a check from the mail, use special chemicals to wash off the handwriting, and then write in a new recipient and dollar amount. The washed check is then deposited in a bank account created by the thieves. In many cases, people don’t find out about the theft until their bank account is overdrawn.
One way to prevent check washing is by making payments online. While that can also come with potential hacking risks, setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA) will help secure your accounts.
