Millions of Tax Refunds Delayed - Here's Why
The IRS has fallen behind in processing millions of income tax returns, which has delayed refunds.
According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, the IRS was holding almost 31 million returns for manual processing before the May 17 tax-filing deadline.
According to the IRS website, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue refunds for some 2020 tax returns that require review including:
incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount
identity theft or fraud issues
claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit using 2019 income.
The IRS will contact you by mail when (or if) they need more information to process your return.
You can check your refund status by going to the “Where’s My Refund” page: https://www.irs.gov/refunds
Click the “Check My Refund Status” button. You will need your SSN, filing status (single, married, etc.), and your exact refund amount. For your exact refund amount, check the instruction letter we sent you with your return.
